13 October 2025: FABRIC hosts Rudolf von Sinner (PUCPR Curitiba, Brazil)
FABRIC hosted Rudolf von Sinner, a leading expert in public theology, for a conversation about religion and migration. Rudolf also delivered a lecture on Sovereignty, Self-Limitation and Status Confessionis: Biblical, Historical, and Systematic Perspectives in the research seminar on “Global Christianity and Interreligious Relations”.
24 September 2025: Nonvoter Remote Partisanship
Inci Öykü Yener-Roderburg was invited to present her research on “Nonvoter Remote Partisanship: Response of the Nonvoter Kurds to the Turkish Elections in Germany” at the workshop “Locating Diaspora in Kurdish Studies: Migration, Identity, and the Politics of Knowledge”, hosted by Humboldt University Berlin in Germany.
9 September 2025: The Church’s Role in Meeting with Converts in the Asylum Process
Jonathan Morgan was invited by the Church of Sweden in Malmö. He presented his research on “The Church’s Role in Meeting with Converts in the Asylum Process” to practitioners who work in faith-based organisations in the city.
1 September 2025: New Book Published
Co-edited by FABRIC’s PI Ulrich Schmiedel, together with Anna Hjälm and Ryszard Bobrowicz, Living in A World of Neighbours: Activists and Academics in Conversation about Multi-Faith Refugee Relief brings together activist and academic voices affiliated with A World of Neighbours, a multi-faith-based network that has been engaging with people on the move across Europe since 2015.

Ulrich Schmiedel delivered a keynote titled “Diversity as a Key to Democracy: Refugees – Religions – Racisms” at the Summer School of the Eastern European Institute of Theology, located in Lviv, Ukraine, on “World with Broken Borders: Theological Perspectives on Displacement and Diasporas / Світ зруйнованих кордонів: богословські погляди на вимушене переміщення та діаспору”.

Inci Öykü Yener-Roderburg presented “Faith-Based Diaspora Organisations and Refugee Relief in Europe”. The presentation was for a panel on “International Migration Governance across World Regions: Actors and Processes in the Diffusion of Policies and Practices” at the IPSA World Congress of Political Science, COEX, Seoul.

Inci Öykü Yener-Roderburg presented “Faith-Based Diaspora Organisations and Refugee Relief in Europe: The Case of Alevi Associations in Germany and the UK”. The presentation took place at the Second Biennial International Conference of Alevism Studies, University of Westminster, London.
26 June 2025: Why Are Expats Leaving Germany?
Inci Öykü Yener-Roderburg was featured in a Turkish-language WDR COSMO radio programme titled “Why Are Expats Leaving Germany?”, where she shared her experience of moving from Germany to Sweden.
5–6 June 2025: Populism at the Margins
Inci Öykü Yener-Roderburg presented “Populism at the Margins: Ethnic Minority Parties and Political Belonging in Western Europe”. The presentation was for the workshop “Populism For, Against, or By the Minorities? Social Groups in Populism Research”, hosted by Tallinn University within the framework of the SIDESTREAM project.
27–28 May 2025: Race and Religion in the Law of Migration
FABRIC hosted an international and interdisciplinary workshop on “‘Race’ and ‘Religion’ in the Law of Migration: Connecting the Empirical and the Ethical” in cooperation with Rutgers Law School, Rutgers University, NJ, USA. This workshop brought together scholars from legal and religious studies to compare the ways that governmental and non-governmental agencies and actors address the humanitarian needs of forced migrants in the E.U. and the U.S.
21 May 2025: The Postmigrant Society with Naika Foroutan
FABRIC hosted a roundtable on “The Postmigrant Society” with Naika Foroutan (Berlin) at Lund University. Dianne van den Bosch and Öykü Yener-Roderburg offered responses to Foroutan’s account of the postmigrant society. Chaired by Ulrich Schmiedel, the roundtable was connected to the conferment of the honorary doctorate of the Lund Faculty of Theology to Foroutan.

9 January 2025: Faith-based Approaches to Justice with Alana Vincent
FABRIC welcomed Alana Vincent for a conversation on faith-based approaches to justice. Alana, who teaches at the University of Umeå, is on FABRIC’s advisory board. She offered feedback on our research before informing us about Jewish conceptualizations of justice in Jewish texts and traditions.
23–26 November 2024: Three Panels at the American Academy of Religion
As Co-Chair of the Religion and Migration Unit of the American Academy of Religion, Ulrich Schmiedel co-organized three international and interdisciplinary panels at the annual meeting in San Diego, USA. The panels explored the interrelated themes of “Religion, Migration, and Gendered Relations”, co-sponsored by the AAR Religion and Migration Unit and the AAR International Women’s Caucus; “Religion, Migration, and Human Rights Activism in a Time of Hardening Borders”, co-sponsored by the AAR Religion and Migration Unit and the AAR Religion and Human Rights Unit; and “Religion, Migration, and Resistance to Oppression”, sponsored by the AAR Religion and Migration Unit.
